Explore the Tárcoles River
Travel through the habitat of the enormous crocodiles that live in the Tárcoles River. From a comfortable pontoon boat, explore exuberant mangroves and the surrounding transitional forest, where hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles flourish. This is an important nesting area for scarlet macaws and home to large colonies of crocodiles—some measuring up to 23 feet in length. More than 250 bird species can be found here, including tanagers, flycatchers, trogons, orioles, herons and hummingbirds. During the October-to-April migration period, ospreys, gulls, terns, cormorants, pelicans and frigatebirds are also frequently seen.
