Arrive prepared with the documents immigration may request. Requirements vary by nationality, so verify the current rules before every trip.
Important: Your nationality, travel history and the immigration officer's decision determine the documents required and the length of stay authorized.
The Essentials
What to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Carry a valid, machine-readable passport or travel document. The required remaining validity depends on the immigration guidelines applicable to your nationality.

Return or Onward Ticket
Be ready to show confirmed travel leaving Costa Rica before your authorized stay expires. An approved airline, bus or cruise ticket may be accepted.

Visa, If Required
Visa requirements depend on nationality. Tourists from the United States, Canada and many European countries generally do not require a visa, but should still verify current rules.

Proof of Funds
Immigration may request proof of sufficient funds. Official guidance currently specifies at least US$100 for each month or partial month of legal stay.
Length of Stay
Your Entry Authorization Controls the Date
Some nationalities may be authorized for up to 180 calendar days, while others may receive up to 30 days. The immigration officer determines your permitted stay at entry and may authorize a different period. Confirm the date shown on your entry record and leave before it expires.

- Confirm passport validity and visa rules for every traveler, including children.
- Keep your return or onward ticket accessible when passing through immigration.
- Carry a copy of your passport and entry record separately from the original.
- Check whether your recent travel requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
