We've all seen them in magazines, on television or gliding across a golden-sand beach: surfers somehow make the whole thing look effortless. Getting the board beyond the waves—never mind standing on it—can seem slightly ridiculous from shore. Then you arrive in Costa Rica, home to some of the world's best waves, and dismissing the idea becomes much harder.
For the rest of us—the slightly “chicken” but deeply intrigued—Jacó Bay offers kinder waves and forgiving sets. A patient bilingual instructor will choose the right board, teach you how to pop up on the sand and stay with you in the water as you work beyond the break. Falling is part of the fun, and with a few corrections and waves under your belt, you will understand why surfers return to the beach every day. Lessons are available for children and adults, with small groups and personal attention designed to help you catch a wave during your first lesson.
